FUTURE OF THE
MARINE BARRACKS
MARE ISLAND NAVAL SHIPYARD

It has been said that the Marine Barracks would make a very good Hotel. This would be true. But the only thing that is certain is that the outer portion of the Marine Barracks building itself cannot be modified in any way. The Marine Barracks, of course, is on the historical preservation list and will be there for the world to see for many years to come. As for the inside, it can be changed to accommodate whatever project takes over the Marine Barracks in the future, whether Hotel or any other variety of situations.

There was a time when two schools were looking into leasing the Marine Barracks, which did not come about. Then a contracting company looked into making the Marine Barracks into 46 inner condos. This was found to be too costly a project and the plans were scrapped. All the homes were torn down that existed around both sides of the Barracks so, for reasons I don't know, the Barracks has been kept from sight with a high dirt hill around the whole building.

I was just notified about the dirt wall around the Marine Barracks. Quote.... "The dirt piled around Marine Barracks is just temporary. It is placed to surcharge the area for future buildings" (what ever that means!)

In our last reunion the piles of dirt was removed, as stated, and the Barracks was up again for grabs. It has been a year sence I have heard of any use of the barracks. So don't know what is planed, if any, for the former Marine area. The museum at Mare island refused my request of placing a display replica of the North Gate with guards, so I refuse to to keep in any contact with them or share any "water marked" photos off of this site with them. This is because we may be the "Few" but we make a bigger impact on any area we have been in, than the larger Navy pocessed which we protected.

In other words... THERE IS NO EXCUSE, WHAT SO EVER, THAT A MUSEAM, OR ANYONE ELSE, SHOULD MAKE THE MARINE PRESENTS ONLY ONE PERSENT OF ANY NAVAL BASE MUSEUM THAT HAD A MARINE PRESENTS!!!

Well... now that I have that out of my system... and if you feel the same way... you can make your feelings known at... http://www.mareislandhpf.org/

I have the uniforms and gear ready. All that is needed is to build the sub tower to complete the display. AND IT WON'T TAKE UP THAT MUCH ROOM, which seems to be the biggest bitch.
